I see what you mean about having a broad area to research. There are multiple components to success in 3rd grade science, including curriculum and methods of instruction. You have access to reliable data with district benchmarks and unit quizzes. Do your 3rd grade teachers have access to a designated curriculum or are they on their own to meet state standards? Do you have specific populations who are performing more poorly than others, or are you equally interested in all students?
ReplyDeletenevermind about the broad area comment.the other Amanda felt like her topic was too broad. As an elementary teacher, I am interested in your research.
ReplyDeleteHey Amanda,
ReplyDeleteI teach band we go to contest each year. The ratings determine a lot and provide a very concrete means to determine your effectiveness. I can't imagine being a core subject teacher and not having the judge's comments to guide future improvement. This is year 22 for me and I now judge and it is fun to help young teachers develop and grow. That is one of the reasons that I decided to get my Masters. I think it is great that you are going to evaluate in the area of science and help your Principal and fellow staff members. I know that good teaching is good teaching regardless of the subject being taught but it is also very intimidating to think of all of the different disciplines and that as the Principal you are asked to help them all.

ReplyDeleteI am very interested to see the findings of your research. Science is such a sticky area with our students these days, I am open for any and all suggestions when it comes to improving perfomance within the science classrooms. I am a middle school teacher, and I go into 6th, 7th, and 8th grade science classes and observe when I can. I know the assessment scores this year at our campus haven't been as good as in the past, and I'd love to share some tips with my colleagues in regards to success within the science classroom.
Your plan looks good. Looking forward to your study findings. Good luck with this and any future action research.
